A Gallery Fine Art, Palm Desert, CA

With the recent completion of the Plaza Theatre restoration, it felt like the perfect time to paint this iconic landmark in the heart of Palm Springs. The work is based on a 2008 nighttime photograph by my good friend Ian Sitren, capturing the sign brilliantly illuminated against the desert sky. I used airbrush to suggest the glow of neon behind the lettering.
Originally opened in 1936, the historic Plaza Theatre hosted world premieres of My Fair Lady and The Music Man, and during the 1940s became a popular broadcast venue for stars including Jack Benny, Bob Hope, and Amos ’n’ Andy.
