I typically don’t rework a finished painting, but sometimes an image tells you it has more to say. The original Route 66: Snow Cap was completed in 2022, inspired by a stop at Delgadillo’s Snow Cap in Seligman, Arizona, during a road trip with Al and Katy. Katy suggested the stop—she had been coming there with her family for years. I’m glad we did. For the Redux, I simplified the composition: eliminated the distant landscape, reduced the sky to a single color, and heightened the contrast of the building. The goal was to let the geometry and structure of this iconic roadside attraction take center stage.
A second look. A stronger painting
Also from Seligman: Route 66: Soft Serve. More roadside food: Dairy Dale and Zuma Snack Shack.
