Artist Notes—Revisiting a Painting: I don’t normally do studies, but in this case, a smaller, earlier version of this image became just that.
I was satisfied with the smaller version, but I felt compelled to see what would happen on a larger scale. The composition particularly interested me—the grain silo bleeding off the right edge and the lone building slightly off center create a quiet tension between scale, composition, and color.
The isolated building sits within a vast prairie landscape of cerulean blue sky and golden fields. The grain silo, with its rust, faded color, and weathered surface, reflects years of exposure to the northern plains.
Sometimes a painting needs more room to develop.
