SanctuarySanctuary

Artist Notes: “Sanctuary” depicts an abandoned church resting quietly on the western prairie, its weathered structure standing as a reminder of the lives and communities that once gathered there. Isolated against an expansive landscape and open sky, the building suggests both physical and emotional distance, while also holding the memory of shared experiences — church services, revivals, celebrations, harvests, and moments of mourning and reflection.

The muted palette and soft morning light create a sense of stillness as the facade emerges gently from the surrounding prairie. Simplified forms and minimal detail allow the viewer to focus on the presence of the structure itself and the quiet atmosphere it inhabits. The small white cross and narrow blue windows become subtle focal points within the composition, reinforcing themes of refuge, faith, and endurance.

The word “Sanctuary,” faintly stenciled into the foreground, echoes the painting’s underlying themes of shelter, sacred ground, and remembrance. Though abandoned, the building continues to suggest a place of pause — a space where memory, loss, hope, and the passage of time remain present within the landscape
